    Hi all!

My Q7 4M is here and I paid a frankly extortionate £3,000+ to have the tow bar fitted with trailer assist enabled.

This is all working simply superbly, and I have towed about 60 miles so far with it.

However, something that occurred to me is that with the ring should I be lubricating the ball hitch? So far I haven't, I can see it's starting to rub some of the paint off... I plan on towing a heavy load several hundred miles in the New Year so wish to make sure i'm not oging to damage anything!

If your using an Alko hitch or another hitch with friction pads to stop snaking etc then do not lubricate it, you should also clean the paint off as it contaminates the friction pads.

I’m not using a hitch with friction plates. Just a plain old hitch.

My query is due to the sensor ring & possible contamination of it

Ah right, I'm not sure now then. As if using a normal hitch you'd expect to throw grease on there, but sensor ring may rely on friction with coupling to sense what trailer is doing. Have you had a look in your manual to see what it says in there?

I have had a look and it doesn’t say.

I might ring the dealer and see if they know (unlikely)

    Final update for this:

Called dealer, they didn’t know. Called Audi UK and after much head scratching on their end. They said if the Teflon coating has worn off. Then use a small amount of grease.

There we go then. Right, or wrong, it’s what Audi say to use.
