    Hi guys.
Below are the new "default" values for diesel smoke emission for UK MOT which came in to force May 20 2018.

Vehicle First used before July 2008
    Non turbo 2.5m-1
    Turbo 3.0m-1
First used on or after 1 July 2008
    All diesels 1.5m-13.
First used on or after 1 January 2014
    All diesels 0.7m-1

These default values only apply if the vehicle does not have an emissions plate.
Passats have an emissions plate at the bottom of the driver side B post (between the doors)
The smoke value is on the bottom right hand corner of this plate.
My 2005 Passat plate is damaged but the local garage think it says 0.70.
If this is correct my 2005 non dpf passat must have smoke emissions that are the same as a post January 2014 diesel (default).
If this 0.70 smoke value is correct then my Passat can never pass a UK MOT after May 2018 because I doubt this non dpf engine can ever get smoke emissions below 0.70.
As the emission plate on my car is impossible to read clearly the MOT will have to use the default value of
    3.0m-1

So my question to you guys. What number do you have in the right hand lower corner of your emission plate? Can my Passat really have 0.70?

This is what I thought with my 2003 Passat , VIN value 0.60 !!!

Lowest it had blown was a 1.00 mean , new thermostat cured it , now 0.52 and tested 6 months + later 0.34 with reports of people getting even lower results .

This is what puzzles me. Why would a 2003 non dpf have a value of 0.60 on the plate when the 2008 default value with dpf is 1.5 and 2014 non dpf is 0.7. The numbers don't make sense.
If your engine can get 0.34, what is the point of the dpf. It is a Diesel Particulate Filter and yet your value is half the dpf default value. Very strange.

Dpf equipped cars can get very low mean results like 0.10 , but they can blow 2.00 on the first acceleration of the 6 allowed .

The whole manufacturers smoke coefficient value vin value is flawed and boggles the mind .

    2003 1.9 tdi Passat 0.60
    2005 1.9 tdi Passat 0.70
    2009 1.9 tdi Passat 1.00
    2009 1.8 tdci Ford C Max 1.75 !!

On the thread I started - 'OBD disconnected' - I said that the VW dealer disconnected it because of MoT emissions checks, and that the tester has to check the emissions at the exhaust.

    Passat 140tdi 12/2016:

    The results were: "Opacity (3m-1), C5 <0.1 m-1, C6 <0.1 m-1, C7 <0.1 m-1, Average <0.1 m-1".
2006 (Dec.) B6 2.0TDi 140 Confort | Moka anthracite nacré | CControl | Highline MFD | Chrome Grill | Meta Targa rear parking sensors | Debadged

That is the point I wanted to make. The emissions plate values don't seem to make any sense and yet are part of the MOT now. But some care makes/models don't have a plate. So one make/model will fail an MOT on smoke emissions and another will pass because it has no emissions plate.
