Hi, my beloved Mk5 Golf failed its MOT due to rusted sills and is going to be too expensive to repair. She is mechanically sound and I know the engine has a lot more life left in her (120k) so could be willing to have a little project of swapping this engine into a Golf with a goosed engine.

I’ve come across a 2.0 GT TDi Golf that needs an engine replaced but I’m not sure if this would be a simple swap or if there are other items such as wiring loom, ECU and other parts that need to be changed over too. I am not the most electronically minded when it comes to “modern” cars (have no issue with 70’s stuff lol!).

Any advice would be grateful as would put my mind at rest as don’t want to just put it away to the scrapies. Pretty sure it wouldn’t be a simple swap but just want to check with more experienced folk.

    Thank you.

I'd have thought you'd do better to get some sort of swap done to get the engine you want for the engine you have - maybe someone on eBay selling a few different ones indicating that they turn them around. Or send them both yours to just get the TDi back in decent nick?

Leaving aside the mechanical / electrical part you may have trouble with insurance, resale of vehicle, etc with things that mean it no longer matches basics of V10.
