Hi, just joined in the hope of getting some information.

I have a 2014 Passat Estate 2.0 TDI that I tow with. The manual says that the stop/start should be off when towing, but doesn't say why.

I contacted VW for more explanation, and all they said was it's due to the extra weight and load that the vehicle is pulling. That doesn't make sense to me as the vehicle is stationary when the stop/start is working, so the extra weight and load makes no difference.

    Can anyone explain further?

    Thanks.

Only a theory, but perhaps to prevent the engine stopping immediately after towing when the turbo is at its highest temperature.

It would be good to let the engine idle for a time to allow the oil to circulate and dissipate the heat in the turbo, minimising the possibility of the oil in the turbo degrading through heat soakage to the bearings and oilways.

Its turned off while towing due to the extra load on the electrics and also because a caravan fridge and charging circuit don't play nice with Start/Stop, they go into fault until reset.

Disable it all the time if you love your engine! I've recently acquired a car with stop start and I now habitually press the 'A' button before driving off, (need to do the change with VCDS). Fuel savings are negligible and stop start is bad for engines, most of an engines wear occurs in the seconds it takes for oil pressure to build up and cutting off the oil flow to a hot turbo is a killer longer term. I think it's an added complexity to a modern car made to make it appear greener and lower emissions tax

Sorry for the delay in answering. I forgot about this forum.

Thanks to KevTrem and davmal735, both of those make sense.
