    Hi,

Just purchased a '56 A6 3.0 TDi ASB with 122k miles on the clock - it runs really well and got over 42mpg on the motorway back home.

However, I have noticed a fairly large amount of oil residue (looks quite old) around the turbo and on some pipes below. I've attached some photos.

Every so often, the idle is slightly uneven too.

Has anyone else had this problem? I did a search a read a few other forum posts but wondered if anyone had the same as me?

    Thanks,

Hello mate, congrats on the purchase.

I never worry too much about old oil spills on a 100k engine. Too many options to think about, could be an old spill during service, a previous leak etc etc.

In regards to the uneven idle for me personally it was the EGR valve which I did a quick fix by blanking and deleting it. Blanking plate costing £5-10.

Uneven idle could be a number of things, try disconnecting the MAF and see if I resolves the issue. If it does then its most likely fault with the EGR.

It's not an oil leak, it a failing crank case breather chucking oil into the air inlet system. Pop the hose off the drivers side intercooler and you will find lots of oil in there...

Solution are either replace the crank case breather or get a catch can system sorted.

    Hey B5NUT,

Is it the oil separator that needs replacement? 057 103 495 N?

In my search I found this guy on eBay who sells just the membrane for inside the separator: Membrane oil separator VAG 057 103 495 | eBay
I haven't priced a separator from the agents, but I would imagine that it's cheaper to just replace the membrane if that's the part that probably fails.

I'm pretty sure mine is passing a bit too.

Zit501, did you buy just the membrane and replace it? Did it work? I have the same problem.

I've had a look on eBay but that guy doesn't appear to sell the membranes now.
