I can't see how it can be by the book, if the MOT is post May 2018, removing the DPF and still driving the vehicle is illegal and is now an immediate MOT failure. The MOT tester wasn't following correct procedures.

I hear what you are saying, but you still risk a thorough MOT tester spotting it and failing it. You roll the dice and take the chance.

Depends on age, value of car and how risk averse the person is.

Some dpf's because of top and bottom engine covers are impossible to see and if you can see it , can you see the blind side ?

No roll of dice needed if you get an inspection light and you can't see it or it's blind side .

So just an update and hopefuly useful info for anyone that may read this thread afterwards... Car was taken to Audi and the tech identified that one of the temperature sensors before/after the turbo (im not clear which one) was not giving a temperature reading. This meant that the car did not get a signal indicating that the temperature was hot enough to start a regen which is something it would do in normal driving hence leading to the DPF/engine/ warning lights coming followed by it going into limp mode. The sensor cost £130 and needs 2hr labour. This explanation seems to make sense to a lay person like myself but i am interested to hear about anyone else's thoughts and/or experience?
