The MMI system will work/startup without a control panel, it just you won't have any control over the MMI system, that was never going to be the fault with your system.

If the gateway is dead then the hole car is dead, as every module communicates vi the can-gateway, and the gateway is also located behind the glovebox.

Gateway is the one with the VW/Audi logo in the picture below, and you can see the two optical cables going into the unit.

All the other part locations are correct in your list

Thanks once again B5NUT - really helpful to me.

Therefore, based on this, do we think that the Control Head is what I need to replace, or the CAN Gateway?

Now that I have these test results from VCDS - I'm assuming that it's the Control Head that is stopping everything from working?

    Ok - thanks for this.

I'll get my hands on one, and am aware that it may well need to have the component protection overridden/reset to make it work. Do you, or does anyone, know anyone in the SE that can do this electronics job outside of the Main ********?

    Many thanks!

    RESOLVED!

It was indeed the Control Head - many thanks B5NUT.

The Control Head was fitted, and most local electronics people wanted £100-£150 to remove the Component Protection (Yes, financial rape).

In the end, I used CT Cars in West Horsley, Surrey - who charged me the very fair £40 to remove CP. Massive shout out to them, who were very friendly, reasonable and offered me a while-u-wait service that was appointed - they even threw in coffee! It was done in about 15 mins, and I drove off very happy with a fully working system. I've allowed a number of weeks now since it was done to make sure it was a permanent fix - it is.

Hi RJS, Thanks for this topic, I have just had a very similar issue which I have diagnosed using VCDS.

I also have a radio issue, no electrics or optical as well as the control head issue.

Do you have a part number for the control head or is it a generic VAG bit of kit, one item, many applications?

    Cheers

    Tim

    Hi Tim

No - it's defo not a generic bit of kit. This is the brain of the MMI system and specific to the A6. You'll need to remove yours to get the specific part and version numbers, which annoyingly, are on the hidden side of the unit. You can't see it, until you've removed it - it's also a tricky bugger to remove as the far bolt is a far reach whilst you're outside of the car on your knees removing it blind! It's a bit awkward to refit also.

My CH part number was: 4E0 035 729

However, there are different versions, depending on the spec of your car, and the spec of the MMI system - bluetooth, rear parking sensors, etc etc all make a difference to which unit is fitted to your car. You might find that a higher spec'ed CH will retroactively work with a lower specced car, but definitely not vice versa. In my opinion, you should replace like with like to expect it to work.

For example, there is a HU Basis (Basic I think), as well as a HU Video version.

Once I had mine out, I compared all the label data to the ones from breakers on eBay, to get the closest possible match. One that was manufactured as closely (within a month or two) to mine, had the same part number, had the same HU Basis type etc etc.

I knew that the SW version probably didn't matter all that much, as I have the SW update discs anyway. Spec seems to be the most important element here, but it's a bit of a game and I made a "best guess" from the data available. I was fortunate that I found a CH for just £25 on Fleabay (from Hungary), but I see them listed for well over £250 in some instances.

Depending on the age/spec of your car, I do have a spare Becker tuner knocking about here, which was used by the clown electrician that failed to diagnose the fault with the car, that I haven't got around to parting with. I've got an amp too  for the same reason!

It's a bit of a risk, as you could fit a new tuner and CH, go and have the CP removed from both of them, and still not find that it cures the exact issue you've got! Still, cheaper than taking it to the main *******....

So here we are then, CH partly removed to find details as seen below. Part number is the same as yours.

The internet is my friend and I’ve found a similar CH which is a little newer, same part number, same model number, newer software etc, so it’ll directly replace what I’ve got once the component protection is removed ......correct? New unit details below
