With everything seemingly electronic these days, a multitude of problems may be hidden under a common fault light - such as the amber engine warning indicator.
Rather than having to (try) and call upon the services of rescue/recovery agencies to diagnose the fault, is it worthwhile investing in a magic box of my own? (an A6 and a Skoda in the household btw).
I'm a bit puzzled by the differences and capabilities of the VCDS HEX-V2 system compared to an OBDii tester (e.g. NEXPEAK.... (other devices are available)). Clearly one is far more expensive than the other, but for a non-mechanic is one more appropriate than the other?
More specifically, the current fault is P0674 - glow plug 4 open circuit. Car seems to run OK, as usual, mpg is normal, no smoke or noise. Audi dealer can't see me for another 12 days!!! (A6 65 plate 2.0 TDi ultra auto)
Would appreciate the thoughts of this excellent and well-informed community. Many thanks.

Only VCDS will give you decent information on VAG cars.
VCDS would probably be more specific on whats wrong with glow plug circuit.
Codes with P in front are generic not VAG specific.
You can start with glow plug check.
Generic code readers might give no info at all on some faults.

A glow plug has gone, used to be they were only for starting but now help continue the burn, probably worth replacing a set if you're doing one.

It used to be the case glow plugs would last 10's of thousands of miles but thanks to the marvels of modern diesel technology we now have pressure sensing glow plugs falling over after a few years.
