What exactly did you connect it to?

Or do you mean not permanently to the battery?

Could you not drill and tap the + post for the booster in the engine bay and connect it that way? would only take the garage 5 mins with the correct tools. That's what I would do in your situation, that way you have the comfort connector where you wish and it can be easily disconnected if needs be.

Tapped threads into lead don't work that well. It would be easier and just as effective to drill suitably sized holes in the battery posts and secure the ring connectors with self tapping screws.

I have a mains plug hanging out from the bonnet, which I occasionally forget to disconnect and stow under the bonnet before driving out of the garage. If I'm lucky I remember when I hear the plug rattling down the drive before it is destroyed.

Due to this aspect I would suggest locating the CTEK charger in the boot, connected to a suitable permanent 12v point, like a 12v socket in the boot, and having the mains supply cable hanging out of the boot.

That way, if you forget it and drive away, it will, with luck, just pull out of the socket.

I didn't realise the posts under the bonnet where lead, as you say its too soft to tap and have a sufficient thread to use for a bolt.

Don't do anything with the jumper terminals.

Connect the 12v postive to the starter motor and use a fused lead to the quick connector.

Then connect the negative lead to the engine earthing point and the quick connector.

Make sure the leads are ran and fixed securely away from any moving item.

The battery was the first thing that got replaced. There was a high spec Bosch start stop battery in there that was five years old. My garage said that it had never been coded to the car. They replaced it with a more suitable battery less than a year ago.

The car has probably sat there for three days without being used and was reading 3v. My wife had used it for a few shortish trips, max being about 40 mins. She had said it had been struggling to start (even though I’ve had all the glow plugs replaced). That in hindsight probably suggests that the battery was starting to get low.

On other occasions it can sit there for a week and be fine. When I use it myself, I do long trips in it. Normally about 300 miles per day. We tend to generally use the Audi for longer trips and just use the other car for the day to day run around.

I’m not sure how they did the tests, but as far as I’m aware they left it overnight on a couple of occasions connected to something, and then read the results the next day. Unfortunately that particular garage had closed down now so can’t ask.

It’s gone down a bit over the past two days again. Reads 11.5v on the battery. Just started engine to see if alternator is doing anything. Reads 14.09v on the jump posts under the bonnet, but 13.6v directly on the battery. Is that the power management restricting how much goes in, or is that voltage drop over the cables from engine to boot?

Just an update on my plight. Hopefully it is fixed. I ended up purchasing a CTEK Time To Charge charger, and wired the comfort connector directly to the battery. I hooked it up every night when I got home. (Guess I’ll have to get used to that for future vehicles).

That worked most of the time, although occasionally I would come to it in the morning and it would be showing an error.

Anyway I read a post Singhl had made on another thread. He said there was a bug in the battery management module which didn’t always shut down the radio and amp. I told my mechanic about it who checked up on it, and there was a software update available for the battery manager. This is separate to the MMI software. It cost me £60 to have it updated. Most of that was the licence he had to pay Audi.

I’ve used the car twice now in two weeks. So far, so good. No drain.

Thanks everyone for all your help and advice.
