When we switch off the engine of our Golf (2004, 1.6 petrol Auto), the fan stays on for a considerable amount of time afterwards - not sure exactly how long but definitely 5 minutes+. We've had it a couple of months; the previous owner said that various garages have looked at it without success, but I can't imagine it's anything that elusive. Has anyone else had this problem?

N.B. This issue is not linked to the other thread I started tonight about a battery problem with the same car - it's been going on much longer.

Not seen that myself. Fan problems tend to be all or nothing if something goes wrong. Things I'd be checking are:

    1. Has car got one or two fans - and if the latter, are BOTH working
    2. Nothing blocking air flow through radiator core outside (e.g. fins full of crud)
    3. Nothing blocking radiator inside (build up of sludge) so the fans can't cool properly
    4. The radiator fan thermostat itself - it could be faulty (if you look down left hand side of battery, the fan thermostat is visible on the back of the radiator mid way down)

With 2 and 3, the car would likely be running a bit hot on the temp gauge.

Worth bearing in mind that on a mk4 with air con fitted, it isn't just the thermostat on the radiator that can turn the fans on. There is a fan control unit bolted to the underside of the metalwork under the battery - so that when the air-con compressor is running, both radiator cooling fans are switched on independently of the radiator thermostat. These fan control units have been known to go faulty - but I can't easily see how it would cause this problem as your ignition and therefore air-con is going to be off. A way to prove this would be after you have switched your ignition off and the fans are still running, pull fuse S180 (in the fuse box on top of the battery), which knocks the power to the fans off for your own safety. Then pull the connector off the back of the fan thermostat, and then put S180 back in. If fans remain off, you know for certain it is the fan thermostat keeping the fans running, and not some strange control unit fault.
