Sorry to post two threads in one evening, but this one is more of a niggle at the moment rather than a full blown problem.

When driving the steering is perfect. It feels tight, precise and smooth, but when steering at low speed like maneuvering through a car park the steering feels a bit notchy or lumpy (can't think of another way to describe it) just before full lock steering both left and right.

I know these cars have that stupid electric power steering pump which I presume is starting to wear, and I'm too scared to even look at the cost of a replacement!

Is this a common thing to happen or does it mean that mine is quite far gone in terms of kicking the bucket? Should I expect it to just die altogether out of the blue?

It would be interesting to see how it feels when the wheels are off the ground but I don't have the facilities to do that, although it passed the last MOT with no mention of it so I'm pretty sure it was fine when they did the lock to lock test.

It's probably one of those things that could last another 100,000 miles or could go tomorrow, and being a VW there's no way of telling!!

They have EPAS, Electric Power Assisted Steering so no pump, just an electricaly opertead rack drive unit which is replaced as one and the later units like yours are very reliable, look more at worn strut top mounts.
