Thanks for all the comments. I have sent an e-mail to Audi and appealed to them for a repair as a goodwill gesture, as the car is six months out of warranty. I'll wait and see what they say.....

No surprise there then........... Audi said 'No'

I must admit I'm disappointed, particularly as the problem first started whilst it was under warranty. Not the kind of service I expected from Audi.

Me on my last C7, cost £25 from dealers for the solenoid and took about 20 mins to do. Was a couple of years ago now though.

Managed to lever the black plastic surround out from behind the filler flap, that gives you access. From there you should be able to make out what your doing. Coloured cover for the flap removes easily.
The way to do it by the book is to stick flat blade screwdrivers through the raised bit and pry it out, the replace the black surround along with flap hinge etc. Trim tools or a bit of cloth behind a small flat screwdriver meant I didn't need to replace that bit.

Thanks for that. How did you lever the black plastic surround out? Are there any fixings that need to be removed first? I presume you did this first before removing the outer coloured cover?

I used a flat blade screwdriver to get between the paint and the black plastic, then carefully levered it away so I could get a bigger screwdriver in. Its clipped in so just pulled out.

Common problem. Audi replaced mine under warranty without question. Car registered Jan 16 - Replaced in June 2017. Don't take no for an answer. Speak to Audi UK if they are giving you the run around.
