Sorry if posted it in the wrong place

    been offered a audi a7,

To cut it short milage is 115,000 Replacement engine was fitted which has 89,000 so clock now has 89,000

Also m.o.t was done this year with the 100+ miles and then i presume after engine was fitted m.o.t has been done again

I have queried this and the garage said the dash and engine came out of the same car? or it would not of started as its coded together? he doesnt have the information for the where it came from as he brought it like that and cannot get it,

is the garage correct about needing both the clock and engine for it to work?

Mileage is saved in many modules in this car.
ECU is responsible for what is shown on dash, so why would dash need changing and just a dash change would make no difference in what is shows.
Something weird about that car be careful.

If the salesman knows nothing about the car. Stay well clear! This is like buying a car with problems but no history and if you have chosen wrongly, it will cost you a fortune. These V6 engines are good for 300,000+ miles, so what went wrong.

Most of it is good for 300k, not the two chains and tensioners, which is gearbox off job.

Thanks Renars, what the life expectancy of the chain and tensioners, and does your comment apply for both long life 20k mile servicing and standard 10k servicing.

Longlife will make it die faster, but around 200 000 they usually are in pretty bad state and rattle a lot on startup.
Hard to say when its critical, but not a good idea to test it.
When chains are quite stretched there is significant rattle at startup for 2-3 seconds. If it rattles longer it is critical.
If you don't drive very much like 50k a year, there is no real reason to do a longlife oil changes.

I did think they last a very long time may be he's using a engine change to try and justify the clock being clocked back. Apparently 1 owner from new on log book full service history until now. Thanks I will just leave it alone. Wh3n you find the perfect car obviously there would be an issue lol

Just a thought. If it has full service history, an audi dealership should be able to log in and tell you the history of the car. irrespective though, I would much rather pay a couple of grand more for a car which has been cherished since new.

Everything is in price. Sketchy cars have to be cheap as you may have to fix something.
There is always some engines that may fail quickly even if generally same type lasts long.
Relatively fresh car with engine change have to be under market price (If not done by dealer under warranty with all papers and history), only when its older it would even out.
