So yesterday i started to hear an odd whining noise which first started when i turned the steering wheel to fully lock whilst manoeuvring.
Within 4 miles the noise had gotten progressively worse.
I stopped the car and worked out it was the steering causing the problem. Checked the fluid level in the reservoir and there was barely anything in there.
I bought correct green fluid and topped up. The liquid went brown and as i turned the wheel from lock to lock tiny bubbles fizzed through the liquid.
I drove home, checked fluid level was fine once home and thought it was ok.
Then today, the same thing. Short drive, a bit of manoeuvring and check the fluid. Almost all gone again!

So as there’s no visible leaks on the road under the car I’m thinking the fluid is leaking into the gaiters or something.
So i guess the rack is knackered.

Options im thinking are remove and send off mine for refurb, or buy replacement and fit.
Is it a fairly straight forward job to do? And secondly as i have a quattro a4 auto is the rack different from that found on a b7 tdi, or 1.8/2.0 petrol manual for example. Basically are they interchangeable?
Thanks
Tom.
