So yesterday i started to hear an odd whining noise which first started when i turned the steering wheel to fully lock whilst manoeuvring.
Within 4 miles the noise had gotten progressively worse.
I stopped the car and worked out it was the steering causing the problem. Checked the fluid level in the reservoir and there was barely anything in there.
I bought correct green fluid and topped up. The liquid went brown and as i turned the wheel from lock to lock tiny bubbles fizzed through the liquid.
I drove home, checked fluid level was fine once home and thought it was ok.
Then today, the same thing. Short drive, a bit of manoeuvring and check the fluid. Almost all gone again!

So as there’s no visible leaks on the road under the car I’m thinking the fluid is leaking into the gaiters or something.
So i guess the rack is knackered.

Options im thinking are remove and send off mine for refurb, or buy replacement and fit.
Is it a fairly straight forward job to do? And secondly as i have a quattro a4 auto is the rack different from that found on a b7 tdi, or 1.8/2.0 petrol manual for example. Basically are they interchangeable?
    Thanks
    Tom.

Just a thought but ive recently move house (a year ago) and there’s sone very rough country lanes with massive craterous potholes, and many many horrible sharp speed bumps that i have to negotiate every day.
Could this have caused some excessive play/wear in the steering/suspension components which in turn has caused a leak in the steering rack?
I have an s line quattro so the ride is fairly firm!

Sure, suspension is wear and tear item, bad roads will break it quicker.
Anyway steering rack could start leaking just of its age as car is 2006.
They can be renewed, but choose specialist with good reputation.
    Current cars:
    2007 Passat b6 2.0 tdi BMR DSG
    2013 Golf MK7 1.6 tdi 5 speed

    Ok.
I’m still considering removing it myself and sending off to a specialist to get it refurbished.
Anybody recommend anywhere, have any of you had your own done?
    Thanks

I’ve found a pretty good ebay service where i can buy a reconditioned rack with full rechrome for £169 inclusive of delivery. And then i send my busted one back, again inclusive of delivery cost.
    Sounds pretty good.
I’m 90% sure mine is busted, although still no sign of any liquid coming out anywhere yet!

Found ps fluid leaking from left side gaiter on the steering rack.
So definitely leaking badly. Got through a litre of chf11s in the last 40 miles of commuting to and from the train station.
I think I’ll be booking the car in at the garage to have the rack removed and replaced.
It’s too dark and wet in the uk outside of working hrs to get it done as a DIY!!

    Ok.
So for anyone else's reference. The 2006 Audi A4 b7 TFSI Quattro avant tiptronic is indeed fitted with servotronic steering.
It means that a replacement steering rack is a tad more expensive than the non servo model.
The Bosch part is about £750.
I've managed to pick up a reconditioned and 3 year guaranteed OEM part for £175.

I'm currently waiting to get the car in the garage which won't be until Nov 19th.
As this is a while away I've bought a cheap runabout for the meantime.
    Anyone ever done similar?

    Ok.
So I’m the proud owner of a 2002 volvo s80 2.4 petrol (SE trim no less!)
£45 to insure for a month on my Audis policy.
    Lovely car by the way.
If anyone requires a runaround car whilst theirs is being repaired, then let me know as the volvo will be going in under a month!
