    Hi all

Just a bit of feedback which may help others

I've been plagued with the dreaded ' limp home mode' and loss of turbo boost on my 2007 A4 Cab for a while now. The issue seems to be fairly common and typically was worse when driving off after the car had had a good run and residual heat was collecting in the engine bay.

Finally got around to a scan , results below:

    2 Faults Found:
013128 - Control Circuit for Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724)
    P3348 - 005 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent

After much research and testing using VAGCOM I was about to conclude the boost actuator controller was toast - it wasn't moving at all during the various tests and the linkage seemed not to be stiff when pushed with a screwdriver (didn't feel like the actual turbo was causing the issue).

However, when playing with the 4-pin electrical connector it became clear the small plastic lug had failed and the connector wasn't making a secure connection with the actuator. It wouldn't stay fully engaged.

So, using cable ties (see picture attached) I effected a temporary repair, cleared the codes and Bingo! Job done.

I think I may get a new connector - lots seeming available online for a few quid - part number 1J0973704 for reference.

Hope that helps someone else not go down a more expensive route if they have the same issue.

Edit - problem reoccured .... same fault code..... so I ordered a new connector (£4.20) and set of connector pin removal tools (£7.00) and renewed the connection. Inside of the old connector was brittle and snapped when renewing... possible cause of the fault but time will tell. Will post back here with an update.

OK update.... rescanned and the code is almost identical,
    origianl fault above = 013128 - Control Circuit for Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724) P3348 - 005 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent
    latest scan = 013128 - Control Circuit for Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724) P3348 - 004 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent

it now only seems to lose boost when the car is restarted after being sat 'hot' for a while.... kind of what it was doing before.

Anyone got any suggestions, or experienced the same?

I guess it points to the actuator being faulty when heatsoaked, but why would the codes above be slightly different? how is 004 different to 005?

    thanks

No difference between 004 and 005 just reappeared.
    I somehow suspect wiring.

Thanks. Out of interest what makes you think wiring as opposed to the actuator? Is there a different fault code to distinguish between the two ?

Also, does anyone know a good supplier of the actuator - I assume they need access to calibration tool VAS 6395A too?

It drives fine from cold start for a whole journey, but it's the restarts when it's been sat hot for a while which seems to throw it into no-boost . No idea how much to replace the actuator or who could provide that service or supply in UK.

Yes, to code the new actuator special tool is needed, it plugs into the new actuator and calibrates it.
The actuator cost me 250€ + 50€ for the work, note, that is here in Latvia.
Also I suggest You get the actuator from dealer as they seem to get thoroughly checked ones (higher quality standards for the actuators heading to dealer?) as we went through 2 brand new sealed boxes and all actuators which came straight from supplier whom all failed in fit. We got one from dealer with exactly the same part number and actually older build date and it worked straight away. We noticed that the bad ones actuator leg moved twice as far as the working actuator's.

Quick update..... decided that a complete refurb Turbo + Actuator assembly was not much more money than the actuator alone, no need to calibrate it then plus i get a new turbo not a 100,000 mile one which may have excess buildup on the VNT mechanism....

Installed, went to test drive and...... no boost until like 2200rpm when it builds quickly and then pulls like a train...

Limp mode entered with different fault code with flashing coil light.

    000565 - Boost Pressure P0235 - 001 - Regulation range not reached - MIL ON

Have checked all hoses / vacuum lines & removed and checked the boost pressure sensor under the left hand headlight.... looked ok

Any suggestions or anyone experienced this before?

    Thanks
