    Hi

I have a 2003 2.5TDI Allroad that I've owned for over 10 years, for the first time in 180k miles it's failed to start.

It started normally, I put it in Drive and started to pull away, after 3 feet it cut out and now wont start. Almost like it's got fuel starvation or the immobiliser has cut in. turns over but wont fire.

The only code pulled up on a scan was 01375 for the electro hydraulic engine mounts.

Would this fault result in it not starting or is that just a coincidence?

If it's not the problem, any ideas what might be? Main injector pump?

    thanks

If it was the immobilser it would not have cut out when driving and it would now start and then cut out. Give it a very gentle sniff and see if it fires up, if it does the pump needs to come off and be sent to a Bosch agent for overhaul, more than likely a split pump diaphragm. If you buy a new, exchange or used pump, it will have to be coded to the immobilser which can be difficult to get done as it won't drive.

from a split pipe some where? There are no leaks that are visible Assumed it wont be the lift pump as there are no code apart from the 01375.

I got a very rough quote for the pump rebuild from my local Bosch agent, approx. £400 plus VAT (does that sound about right?). With the cost of that and doing the job it makes the repair totally uneconomical. So a scrap C5 for the sake of a rubber diaphragm which seems crazy.

The lift pump isn't a lift pump as such but a swirl pot filling pump that the VP44 engine pump draws from. Yes I agree that it is crazy how easy it is for a car to become uneconomic to repair BUT I don't agree with your calculations, approx £1k to fix that car is not uneconomic, yes it is roughly what the car is worth running but the car is worth a lot less than it would cost to replace it AND I don't agree on running a car based on what its trade value is, you could easily get to the point it would not be worth filling the tank! My business partner runs a 2005 AR that he paid £1k for and has spent a lot more than that looking after it plus we are planning a full rear runing gear strip, powdercoat and rebuild with Powerflex bushes. On the other hand he did say "how much and we will get it picked up"......

You will never see a diesel fuel leak because when the engine is running the fuel system from the tank until the injection pump is in the a vacuum. If there is room then air will enter the system and there will be no fuel leakage. There is no lift pump in the tank. The injection pump sucking the fuel from the tank.

Is not the cost of the parts, is the work hours involved in striping, cleaning, reassembling and adjusting the pump. Of course, if you are brave you can do the rebuild yourself and ask them just to adjust it: diesel fuel pump repair kit gaskets seals kit VW Passat 2.5TDI AFB AKN BDG VP44 3165143576656 | eBay
