I also happen to know I have 2 dead glow plugs. Presume that wouldn’t cause it...

Hey crasher, or anyone, do you have any ideas on where I could go next with this?

I have so far managed to trace the drain to something associated with the ignition. After checking the drain and pulling every fuse, relay and disconnecting the CCM, I found a wiring diagram that reveals that fuse S176 on the battery box also feeds the ignition.

I had the steering column cover off today, pulled the plug from the back of the ignition barrel and the drain disappeared.

Progress - but now struggling to work out what that feeds. Crucially: what the ignition switch feeds when it’s in the off position.

One thing the ignition switch feeds in the off position is the park light circuit. I only have a Haynes manual for my Mk4, but I have attached what it shows for this circuit. Basically, grey wire from ignition switch to indicator stork, and it looks like it goes to it's own set of contacts for the up/down position (i.e. separate from the indicators). In the central position, nothing should happen. In up or down, it switches through either a grey/brown (via fuse 23) to left hand tail/side light, or grey/violet (via fuse 22) to right hand tail/side light.

So on the basis that the only output from the ignition switch is indeed on the grey wire (you need to check), you are most likely looking at a partial earth fault (around 40 ohms) somewhere in the immediate vicinity. First thing to check is the connector onto the indicator switch to make sure it hasn't overheated/burnt. Also make sure no-one has inadvertently cut an accessory into that grey wire - though that seems unlikely as park circuit goes off as soon as key is turned to next position so wouldn't be much use for anything.

Fault is unlikely to be AFTER the indicator switch as that shouldn't be passing any current in its normal position.
