    Hi All

my high level brake brake light on my 03 Allroad is not working and triggering the bulb error .
It’s up for test on Monday .
is there anything obvious to check ?
    are they difficult to change?

    Cheers

They are notoriously faulty, some completely fail, some have intermittent faults causing the idiot light on the dash with the annoying beep warning like mine.

Mine was changed with a brand new unit from Germany which was still faulty, I did absolutely every check I could do to find a faulty wire or corrosion to the board but had to face facts that it was a duff light and needed replacing again at £80+

I decided to go down the £3 route to fix it and it works a treat, go on eBay and buy yourself a metre of LED strip light, if will be enough to fix it 3 or 4 times but once is all you will need.

Remove the lamp by popping out the little square screw covers at each end, use a stanley blade to pop them out, remove the two torx screws and withdraw the lamp from the spoiler.

Pull the wiring plug out of the left hand side and you can start to work on the lamp by removing the LED board from inside, it needs to be completely broken out in sections - a bit fiddly. Once you've done that find something flat and rigid like a strip of plastic and cut it so it will fit inside the old lamp, stick the LED strip to it and insert it so the LED's face forwards towards the light diffuser and red lens, hot glue it in place, join the wires up to the existing connection on the car and refit it.

You might just want to replace the lamp with a used one if you are lucky to find a good one but they suffer with dry solder joints and blown LED's and will likely be faulty on this age of car.

They are not covered by the MOT if you disconnect the lamp and tell the tester that the lamp is a 'reflector only' so it won't fail the test.

I wanted mine to work so did the above fix, it takes less than an hour and well worthwhile to stop that dreaded continual beeping noise, the strip has more LEDS than the original and is just as bright if not better!

    Here's the LED's I used - 3528 5050 White Blue RGB LED Strip Lights Stick-on Tape and 12v Adapter Decorate | eBay

Don't forget to refit the screw covers, they only fit one way around, it's obvious if you look at them.

If you remove the inside trim there are two holes where you can poke a screwdriver thru to encourage the old one out. I replaced my tailgate a few years ago and had to use my old one as the new tailgate light was faulty. You may also find the two screws are rusted solid! When fitting replacement use clear mastic all round the inside of the new light to seal the small gap you will get when fitting the new one.
