030 906 030 D changed to 030 906 030 E on the 31/12/1998 and your car was built 25/11/1996 so I imagine your ECU is a replacement under Technical Product Information notice 1276601/5

    Thank you for that mate!

    Does this mean i need to change my 030 906 030 D for an 030 906 030 E ecu?
Theres still a chance that this ecu is still a good working unit ,if i could find vcds to confirm it?
Would a faulty ecu comunicate with a scan tool at all?
Think i will have to ring vw tomorrow to asked if they had comunication with the ecu when the car was there ,but i thought they just coul not adapt TBI...
But seems these D ecu's did had a bug afterall?

Yes the D ECU was faulty, it should have been replaced years ago, with the problem you have you are fighting a losing battle until you have the E revision fitted, from VW main dealers it has been obsolete since March 2016 and the only sourse new that I can see is https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/catalog/product/view/id/65559/s/steuerung-source

As far as I can remember this ECU does not have a soft coding table for version adaptation such as gearbox variations and is very specific to application so will only be used on this model. I was thinking about this and remembered Mrs Crasher had one of these cars brand new in 1999 which was built 3/12/98 so when I get to work I will check to see if I still have a fault code report on it which would show the ECU details but ETKA shows it was built with the “D” version and would be replaced by the “E” for a replacement so exactly the same as yours. She only had it for a year and moved onto a Golf GTI but I don’t remember it having any idle problems, just a very noisy gearbox that the dealer said was normal, the 085 was a terrible gearbox! Mrs Crasher has a 2009 Polo GTI now that we bought nearly new, they were daft money new and hard to find used. If you get a used ECU, to avoid having to get it coded to your car you will need the steering lock housing with key, immobiliser box from under the dash (follow the reader coil cable) and obviously the ECU. You can avoid having to change the complete lock unit by taking the chip out of the donor key and putting it into the original and the chip used on these was the less fragile black plastic type just pushed into a slot inside the fob.

Tanks a lot [Crasher] you're a god sent
Looks like the Polo AFH 1,6 gti and Polo 1,6AEE share the same ECU reference 030 906 030 E (61600.261.15) Magneti Marelli..?
Would it be the same 030 906 030 E ,later fitted to the 1.4 AFH.??

The 030 906 030 E was only used from 95>2000 on the Polo 6N1 with an AFH engine. All the contemporary AEE ECU’s start with 032, the most common version is 032 906 030 AB.

Could you confirm if the 1.6 AFH with ecu 030 906 030 E is exactly the same used on 1.4 AFH?
    Ive seen a couple of 1.6 AFH ecu's online made before 12/98 reference: 030 906 030 E (Marelli)
Did your wife's car had the later ecu?

    Cheers
