I'm about to get my wheels refurbed as my car's previous owner has kerbed the life out of them. They are the 2 colour / polished face twin 7 spoke design and I'm trying to decide on a straight powder coat allover or diamond cut on the front face. The cost of having them polished again seems prohibitive which is a shame as they look amazing apart from the kerbing! A few people have told me the diamond cut finish isn't very hard wearing - any opinions or experience on this would be appreciated as it's not something I've had done before.

Diamond cut will not last long. It just need a chip to pierce the lacquer and the aluminium will corrode. I would powder coat silver. Not as good looking but will stay good for a lot longer and easier to touch up yourself.

Agreed. Many people do this on BMWs who seem to suffer a lot with corrosion, even when they are not chipped. There are quite a few people on forums complaining about BMW arguing about replacing them under warranty. My diamond cut winter alloys that were stored after being cleaned and dried started to corrode around the centre bores. They were not chipped.

Winter is very corrosive on wheels. The salt will damage wheels both mechanically by impact and chemically. When audi supply winter wheels and tyres, the alloys are special winter ones.

I have never heard this with any manufacturer. Do they have a different part number?

The wheels are very different to summer stock wheels.

Thanks for the advice guys. That's definitely enough to put me off diamond cutting! ...very interesting about the Audi supplied winter wheel sets too.
