    Hi All

On my Allroad handbrake cable drivers side rear where it passes through a hole the plastic lug that secures it has disappeared! The cable is slack up to the caliper. I’m assuming I need a new one.
do I need to change both rear parts at the same time ?
    are they difficult to do?

    cheers

    vin

Last year I had to replace both cables on my 2002 Allroad. Adjusters about two feet from calipers were rusted solid resulting in handbrake non-adjustable. I would guess yours has snapped. As I do not have good access below the car I got my local garage to replace (I think I got replacements from Germany - can look out the invoice if you require). For the garage the hardest job was removing the plastic surround at the actual handbrake inside - despite me giving them a copy of removal/install procedures! Also, new (cheap) cable retaining brackets (riveted to underside) were required as these were severely corroded also. From memory the garage did not charge a lot. They also do my mot each year - so it won't fail for poor handbrake!!

Like Ceilidh said above, the most fiddly bit is getting all of the plastic removed from the centre console, but to be honest it is not very difficult do, just hard to do without breaking any of the more brittle plastic tabs. When it's removed you need to disconnect the handbrake cables from the calipers, unbolt the mounting brackets from both sides loose enough to let the cable become free, then feed the cables though the rear arms and then pop them out of the supports that are riveted to the underside of the car. After that, back inside the car disconnect the 2 ends from the handbrake lever, then go back under the car and yank the cables out of thier sockets. Finally repeat the process in reverse with the new cables. A word of advice, do not buy the Bosch cables - I repaced both of my originals withem and they both seized up after just 2 years of use and had to be replaced again. I opted for OEM the 2nd time doing the job. You may need to adjust the cable length after fitting at the rotating adjuster on the cable, but I personally didn't have to do that either time I did the job. Anyway, it is 1 hours work total if no issues are discovered.

Now, every six months, I clean the two adjusters and the rear wheels and re-apply copious amount of anti-corrosion grease.
