Hello, been away for a while with the main car at MB(wifes car is a Poli Gtl, so still kinda true), but looking to return back to a Golf for me. Looking at a Golf Mk 7 Estate R, but many do not have factory fitted Sat Navs. I retro fitted one(rns315) into a Mk 5 years ago and was just plug and play issue. I see the units sell for cheap money on ebay, but are they plug & play like the old days or require much more modifications?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Regards M

The newer VAG head units are component protected which ties them to a specific vehicle. Haven’t looked into it myself yet but believe it’s not cheap to do hence why devices where it’s already been removed tend to cost a fair bit more when they pop up on the sale sites.

I was lucky enough to stumble on my GT estate which had Discover Pro Nav (MIB1 unit) with Dynaudio (which has the larger screen size). This has sated my appetite for modding it for now but I haven’t got apple car play on this version and seeing as I’ve got it for at least 2 more years I might look at changing it for a MIB2 unit at some point.
