    Hi everyone,

First time posting here so please be gentle.

I've tried the search function and googled to my hearts content but cannot find an issue with the same set of symptoms I'm having with a 2005 2.0SDI Golf

    Symptoms are:

    • I noticed the ABS light does not flash up on dash for self test when turning key to first position (which I believe it should, and did), in fact it never ever comes on even with engine running (which I believe it should if there is a fault).

    • ESP button in centre console is lit up saying ESP OFF. Pressing/holding the button does nothing. Wheels will spin (if you try hard enough in an SDI...) but ESP does not cut in or flash on the dash (in fact it never ever illuminates, at any time)

    • Additionally having changed the battery recently, there is now a yellow/amber Steering Wheel warning light, though the power steering seems to work fine and has for about 500miles+ (I believe on VCDS can clear this and is possibly unrelated)

A friend plugged in an OBD2 fault code reader that when scanning shows no errors. I do not have access to VCDS but am going to take it in to a VW Specialist locally if noone here can shed any light on these particular circumstances.

I have checked all the fuses relating to ABS I can find at position 2 in the interior fuse box, and F1 and F2 in the fusebox under the bonnet.

I'm wondering if it's the famed ABS Pump failure but I'm getting no ABS warning light on the dash.

Any suggestions before I take it in to a garage?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

An OBDII reader will not show you what you need, it needs a proper diagnostic system plugging in, not a toy code reader.

Yes I gathered as much, however it successfully picked up an issue with the EGR some time back - so I thought it worth a punt given it was right there in the toybox.

Thanks very much for your input.

Yes the EGR system is OBDII related, the ABS isn’t. If you give my office a ring they can arrange a fault code read for you if you wish, I am on holiday in Wales.
