    Hi all,

So - long story short. Had a Golf GT - DSG 170 - from new. Its' 56 plate

Over the last 4 years ish it's been struggling to start. Serviced on time every time - timing belt - fuel pump - aircon - new glow plugs - new wiring loom - new battery etc etc. Basically what ever this car has needed to be done it's been done.

Now when the car is running, it's perfect. It's starts, but needs several attempts till it fires.

FYI - I'm rubbish with mechanics - I can put fuel in and water - thats it. Anything more than that is left to the professionsals.

    Symptoms

    1. Turn key and starter motors turns - albeit "like it's running out of power"
    2. If the lights are on (automatic lights) and the radio is on - this turning over the starter motor sounds even more "like it's running out of batteries" - really laboured.
    3. Turn lights off - radio off - try again - it still sound laboured, but less so
    4. Another interesting point - one day the windows were accidentely left open but car was locked and the alarm went off. Nothing unusal there. However the alarm was sounding for around 5 mins 10 tops - yet the sound of the alarm was like it had been running for days - indicatator blinking slowly and dimmly light - and the sound was REALLY slow and really quiet. Again "like it's running out of power"

My next attempt is the starter motors - but to me that still doesn't explain the labour sounding/flashing of the alarm

Unless! (And I've just thought of this now) The alternator isn't capturing all the energy from the car and charging the battery fully?? Therefore low power for starting and low power for sounding the alarm etc?

So starter motor and alternator is working but not as effecient has it should?

Oh I dunno - as I said - I'm poop at this sort of stuff.

    Any ideas most welcome,

    Cheers team

    Dan

FYI - Any garage it's been to can't find anything wrong

Has anyone looked at the injectors, mine's in at the moment with same trouble, mechanic says injectors are all carbonated and will need replacing.

I'm told injectors are fine. Plus there was a recall on mine, prolly about, 6 years ago, to replace all injectors. I've also had the Terraclean process done on the car - which I highly recommend.

If the battery or starter is tired it might struggle to reach minimum cranking speed which as far as I can remember is 280rpm, giving you the laboured cranking you describe.

8/10 times we see these issues in the workshop its the starter motor.

try jump starting it and see if it fires straight away

just checked the euro car parts site and with the current promo code it works out at £101 and a bit of change.

Fitting cost varies by garage and location but on average should be around £40

very easy to fit on these engine if you are a little handy at diy.
