Can the CV be released from the wheel hub without removing the whole shaft at the gearbox flange end?

I want to fit a stretch boot on the outer CV and don't fancy removing the whole shaft, I guess its not like the older type wishbone cars where you can pop the bottom ball joint to give some space to slip the CV splines out of the hub but leave the whole shaft in place?

Yes. Without dismantling the ball joints! You can see a lot of movies on YouTube about the process

Thanks, no I don't want to dismantle the joint and upset the snap circlip on the shaft that goes into the CV joint.

I've looked at some YT videos and they seem to suggest that I have to upbolt the whole shaft from the gearbox flange and remove it - just to put a stretch boot on.

How will I get the freeplay to pull the CV out of the hub unless I remove it from the inner end?

I'll have another look, if you have a link or two I'd be grateful!

Ah! I see the inner CV is a triple bearing sliding affair which allows for the shaft to be pulled back out of the hub!

I think I've got it cracked.... in my head!

It's impossible to remove the front CV on the quattro without splitting either of the lower control arm ball joints, the CV needs an extra 5mm to clear the splines.

I did it by popping the front ball joint as I didn't have a splitter and used a trolley jack but it was very tight to get it in and out, the rear balljoint would have made it a lot easier.

    Splitter purchased!

I had just had my front alignment done on the car after changing all the control arms, it was perfect with a dead straight steering wheel.

I split the front control ball joint (on the strut arm) to make room for the CV to be manipulated out from the rear, I never touched the steering tie-rod, none of the geometry should have altered.

Now the steering wheel is off centre to the left and I assume the the alignment needs resetting, why is this the case?

The alignment issues/crooked steering wheel were caused by the rear camber bolt that needed adjusting as I'd replaced a rear spring too, nothing to do with the front control arms.

    Happy days now.
