My car came up with "Gearbox malfunction - you can continue driving" while I was half way through a few laps at Spa-Francorchamps a few weeks ago. It's also come up with a "parking brake fault" It appears to be driving as normal and the warning only comes on after about 20 mins of driving. The temp at the track that day was hot at around 31 degrees. So I assume I must have over heated the gearbox?

I've had it plugged in and the fault comes up as a park/neutral sensor fault. I've been quoted £2k to fix it by an automatic transmission specialist and I've been told the gearbox oil in these boxes is used to cool it. I've probably overheated it so its cooked some of the wiring inside the gearbox or potentially damaged the mechatronic unit.

Does all of this sound about right?

Does anyone else have any experience of this type of issue?

The cars only done just over 50k miles and has always been serviced by main dealers, should I swallow this cost or worth speaking to Audi UK...or am I wasting my time speaking to them because its outside warranty?

Thanks in advance for any replies, I could really do without a huge bill. As it is I need new tyres and a wheel refurb as the paint has cracked on the wheels because they got so hot on the track that day. Was the drive of my life so still not regretting putting her though it all.

I`m curious as to what the gearbox `specialist` quoted the 2k for? Yes the box has an oil cooler, but the overheat fault can be brought on by an electrical fault rather than `you`ve cooked and ruined the `box`. When i had my gearbox serviced the owner showed me invoices from main dealers for failed repairs that my garage repaired for a fraction of the price. I`d tread carefully and do some research into a tried and trusted specialist.
