Bad news from the engineering shop. Head is cracked and is not repairable
I see new heads available from china for £440 delivered, would these be ok? I think its unlikely to pick up a secondhand one from a breakers, have contacted a few breakers and they have sold
    their engines complete.

A genuine exchange built up head, without cams, is £1500. The http://www.tantivy.com/?page_id=216&lang=en could be OK but I would use the AMC head

What's an AMC head? I can't spend £1500 the car simply isn't worth it. After some googling I have found a s/hand one in the Netherlands and another on in the U.S.

AMC are a respected Spainish company that makes aftermarket heads, one for your engine is around £800 for a bare unit. Do you have the special tools available for setting up the chains?

I can't tell what that kit is, it isn't genuine, AST or Laser but I can see it is missing the TDC spark plug adapter equivalent to T10170A and a matching dial gauge plus a decent set of vernier calipers. The kit you have needs to contain equivalents to

    T10352
    T10355
    T40011
    T40243
    T40267
    T40271 1 and 2

Yeah it's a cheapo kit I bought online just to get this job done as I'm never going to use it again. The brand name on it is ASTA. I saw on the Erwin docs I downloaded that it was missing those, but hopefully I can work
    around them.
With hindsight the car should have been scrapped but I've gone this far with it so I will finish it.

I can’t see you working around the dial gauge and vernier measurement, they are critical, even a ting angle change on the crank causes a big change on the gauge, there is very little dwell at TDC.

Ok thanks, I will have another look at the timing procedure later, main problem for now is finding a head that won't cost the earth.
Didn't get a reply from Tantivy yet, there is a guy on fleabay selling chinese heads with valves, but he won't say who manufactures them so the quality could be dubious
