My fuel gauge stopped working a few weeks ago - needle dropped to empty and DTE went to zero. Warning on the dash said 'Tank system malfunction! - contact workshop' I booked it in with Audi but then found it's not on my named component warranty cover so will fix it myself. Today I pulled out the rear seat base and opened the cover and after undoing reconnecting the electrical connections a few times didn't work I tapped the top of the unit with a spanner and the gauge jumped back into life! This is unlikely to be a permanent fix but at least it's isolated it to the drivers side and the unit and not the wiring. So how do I get hold of a part number for a new one? - are there any parts data files around or do I have to go to an Audi parts dept?

I had a similar problem on mine. The fuel tank gauge would just drop to zero every now and again and a decent bash on the drivers side sender would spring it back to life for a random amount of time sometimes days, sometimes weeks. However it got a bit frequent so all you need to do is replace the inline wiring connections in the fuel tank - both sides if it’s a Quattro. there’s a kit 4F0 298 200 B which I used but just 6 scotch blocks will do the same job.

Not a particularly nice job - but mines been fine ever since. Definitely cheaper than replacing the whole unit.
