    Hi all,

I have an s-line A4 B9 with drive select. When I first got the car I put it in Efficiency as economy is important to me as I drive a lot of miles. However, the performance of the car never excited me which given it's the 190 bhp version was disappointing. I thought not much more of it as it's still a lovely car to look at and be in but then one day I started messing around with the drive select. I put it in Dynamic and wow, was a completely different car! Really gave me the kick in the back I'd been hoping for.

My question is this. Will the car be more economical in Efficiency mode than in Dynamic, assuming the same gentle driving style in both settings? If so how does the car achieve this? And if not then what's the point? (I'm guessing Comfort mode changed suspension etc...)

I have it in Auto at the moment as that still seems nicely responsive but is there a downside to this?

Thanks in advance for any answers

Assuming Dynamic/Economy is the same as my A4 (250hp/auto/quattro) - no reason why not but you never know. The main difference is that Dynamic will hold a higher engine RPM for any given situation compared with Economy, so yes that will use a bit more fuel, secondly, Dynamic will override the start/stop system so i would imagine town economy will suffer.

Regarding "Dynamic" all the above is essentially referring to throttle response and the same can be achieved selecting "Sport" on the auto-gear lever.

Having said all that will it make much real-world difference?

I mostly stick to dynamic and my long-term average is around 49mpg, that’s over around 40k. I doubt you would see any significant increase in mpg across any of the drive modes if you drive the vehicle in the same manner, throttle response and gear shift change but if you drive economically the net result is the same.
Mine is a 190 diesel btw

Thanks for the replies guys. I should have said, mine is a manual transmission but I think you've pretty much answered me. A friend suggested I put it in, Individual and set the engine to Dynamic and everything else to comfort which I have done. I must have a cheaper version as there is no separate setting for the suspension in, Individual, only the steering. Seems a bit pointless but there you go. Might just leave it in dynamic as you hardly need to be Mr Strong to turn the car in any setting!

    Cheers again!
