    Hi,

Jeez, buying suspension parts is a mine field.
    I ordered a suspension kit from ebay 2X SACHS SHOCK ABSORBER SET FRONT AUDI A4 B5 8D 94-01 A6 C5 4B 97-05 | eBay
It states that it is for chassis : Until Ch.No.: 4B-X-070 000; or; Vehicle Equipment: For vehicles with level control system; From Ch.No.: 4B-W-100 001; Until Ch.No.: 4B-W-200 000
oem numbers on the link are
    3B0413031, 3B0413031A, 4B0412031F, 4B0412031G, 4B0412031M, the SACHS part number 170 811
My chassis no is 4B95N019179 I do not think I have the level control system so i went off the 4b95n thinking that the N is before the X and all should be well.

The company sent one incorrect strut that did not fit so I fitted one side and went to get another shock locally as the original company has been a nightmare and they are saying I need a sachs 170 813 from going from the reg Nu05 EEO so which one is correct?
They look the same but the oe numbers are different? The oe numbers on the 170 813 are 4b0 412031BM so slightly different.

The old shocks are too rusty to get a number off.

    Please help!
    Thanks

    Robert

You should try and find springs and dampers all round for an 1986 type 85 Coupe GT, dampers are easyish but springs!

    I need your reg first.

Aye. You wouldn't have thought it to be too hard a task!
Reg is NU05EEO i already fitted a sachs part no:170 811 some sites say it fits some say not! It fits as in its on the car but do i need to swap it for different one? If so i shall have to buy another pair.
    Cheers

Maybe the part number has changed and they are the same? I can buy a 170 813 locally but not the 170 811.

Well it was just to put this thread to bed. I managed to get another 170 811 from ECP it said they had the part in stock and I paid a few quid for next day delivery but it took over a week! I got my £3 next day delivery refunded though. I was extremely p155ed off to wait that long but wanted to have matching shocks. ECP have sold both part numbers mentioned above and both fit, i think one is a bit sportier than the other and maybe one had bottom spring cup holders that had slits in the other part number did not.
MOT last week obtained and handling is considerably improved with new shocks and suspension link kit!

Sorry I missed this. Your car has 1BE sports suspension. The Audi number for your front dampers is 4B0 412 031 BM and they are marked as dangerous cargo so are high pressure gas units with a yellow paint mark as ID. This WAS a Sachs 280 541 which was superseded by 280 543 which was superseded by 558 839 which was superseded by 557 837 which itself superseded 280 539 which is also a Boge 33-117-A, so you should have fitted 557 837 or 33-117-A according to Sachs/Boge (same company) BUT in their own cross references these do not go over to 4B0 412 031 BM but instead a selection of 4B, 3B and 8D numbers! The Sachs 170-811 is equivalent to a Boge 33-086-F and again these are equivalent to a whole array of 3B, 4B and 8D numbers but not 4B0 412 031 BM. 170 813 WAS a Boge 33-087-F but both are obsolete from Sachs/Boge and again both covered a mind boggling array of numbers so it appears the only way to get the exact correct damper is to pay £147.58 genuine Audi. As you have fitted the 170 811, I will list the VAG group numbers this covers, notice 4B0 412 031 BM is not listed!

    3B0 413 031 A
    4B0 412 031 M
    4B0 412 031 F
    8D0 413 031 L
    8D0 413 031 F
    3B0 413 031
    8D0 413 031 G
    8D0 413 031 D
    8D0 413 031 BF
    8D0 413 031 AT
    8D0 413 031 AF
    8D0 413 031 M
    8D0 413 031 BD
    8D0 413 031 AC
    8D0 413 031 J
    4B0 412 031 G
    8D0 413 031 BJ

I need to lie down now.......

Ok...so i fitted the wrong ones! I guess the other ones were the sports ones. Typical, same price to on ECP.
Will it be dangerous? Its seems much better than the 170,000 shocks i took off but no surprise there. It seems to pull to the right a little and the garage said it had been tracked it couldn't be related could it.I think i am a bit paranoid now!

I imagine it will be fine, the usual problem with pulling comes down to the struts being built up without a jig and being “persuaded” into lower arm to fork alignment.
