    Hi there

Long time lurker, first time poster.
I've been "having some fun" with the subframe on my 2002 Audi A3, 1.9tdi, engine code ASZ. (Don't ask..)

In the process of this fun, I realised that I don't actually know what the great big "T" shaped lump of metal is that is bolted to the front of the subframe.
It's sort of suspended just behind the sump, below the driveshaft and O/S of the "dog bone" mount. See photos:

It looks like it should be some sort of engine mount - the end part has a hole in it. But like I said, it's not connected to anything (and couldn't be without another bracket which would be missing) other than the subframe.

Anyone care to tell me what it is, and what it is there for? Only thing it could be is some sort of counterweight (?) but that seems really odd to me...

    Thanks!

    Jeroen

Hi Not knowing your chassis number I tried checking A3 subframes and it `could` be for a subframe crosspiece. It isn`t fitted to all models though, so may have some components fitted as standard in preparation for it. If this makes sense!

Thanks. Mmh. Yes - I thought it might be something along those lines... which means that clearly in my current set up it is a very heavy paperweight hanging off the front of my subframe!
Interestingly, none of the subframes I can see for sale on particular auction sites have it attached, but if you Google "audi a3 2002 asz subframe" and click on images, the first two hits look like they have it attached, but other ones don't...

I'm confused. Given how heavy it is, if it really is just some extraneous piece of design, it would be nice to just leave the thing off...

    Hi there

It looks like a anti vibration weight (harmonics block), they are used to cut down / eliminate certain frequencies of vibration and stop them being passed into the passenger cabin

Yes it is a vibration damper. New Golf 2 subframes came with the bracket and if you retro fitted the weight you could tell the difference.
