I'm picking up my 2007 Phaeton on Tuesday its got a FSH but no mention of the 4motion ever being serviced, does it have the Haldex system?, are there any filters that need changing or is it just a simple Drain and refill oil?

    Cheers

No it is an Audi quattro type system but the gearbox likes an oil change at 50k.

Yes, those boxes fail all the time and cost a lot to rebuild, a genuine box can cost £5.5k fitted.

This is the problem with old prestige cars. People tend to think that "ohh it's only a £5K car" but it isn't, it is a £60K+ car and an old £60K+ car at that and cars don't cost less to run as they age, they cost more. There are some very scary stats on the V10 TDI, a genuine exchange reconditioned head is £4500, per side, plus fitting and an exchange engine from is £20K, plus fitting! Which engine is yours, the V6 TDI?

i fully understand the joys of owning an old prestige car that's why I'd rather get anything done to prolong the life of it , my friend bought a 2003 Mercedes S class and nearly fell over when the turbo went on it and looked into replacement turbos, lucky I'm a mechanic (HGV and busses) so I can do most stuff my self, i wouldn't have thought it would be £20k for an engine and fitting that's mad, Volvo trucks charge less than that for a 13L straight 6, I haven't seen many V10 TDI phaetons around, im guessing that the same engine that's used in the Toureg, yeah I've got the V6, i spoke to my local VW dealer about getting the oil changed and they've quoted £454 to just change the oil £200 of that was the oil so i find it hard to see where the £254 in labour is from, I've been underneath there's a drain plug for the box so the sump hasn't got to come off or is there something extra I'm missing, it might be worth trying to find VW's repair information on it.

sorry for the rambling ive just finished a 12 hour day with no breaks, i really appreciate the help mate!

The V10 is an amazing engine and that is coming from someone who hates diesel... The V6 is a much better proposition, an exchange recon from VW is much better value at a touch under £8k, plus fitting...... For statistics, the Q7 6L V12 is my favourite, an EXCHANGE, not outright, bare long block engine is a snip at £47630.18..... (yes nigh on £48k) but that does include VAT.....

I love big cars and love the Q7, its trying to convince the mrs i need one that's the issue so the Phaeton will do for now and when I read £48k i though that was expensive but seeing that includes VAT sounds like a steal

i don't suppose you know the best place to get repair info for VW's I'm going to give the auto box oil change a go myself and just want to make sure its just a drain and refill and that there's noting special id need to do

No it isn't a straight drop and fill. The ZF 6HP-19 has an initial dry fill of 9.8 litres but when draining you only get about 3 litres out unless you rig up a purge system. The fluid is refilled from below using a pressure or gravity filling system. After bleeding the system you then get it hot and by using a diagnostic computer you wait until the fluid reaches 30 degrees and then remove the level plug and let it drain until it stops but you must stop if it reaches 40 degrees and wait for it to cool again.
