Hi all, new to the site and not, at least not yet, an Audi owner. We are seriously considering purchasing a 2014 A8 3.0ltr petrol to replace the ever faithful Omega we have had for 15 years and 175000 miles, she is starting to succumb to the dreaded tinworm, and there is not a lot I can do about that ... So after some information please if you can help.... questions so far are ...

    1. What is the A8 like for towing an 1800 kg caravan for extended periods ?? (the omega has towed ours to the south of France on many occasions) The weight, power and self leveling suspension imply the A8 "should" make a decent towcar .....

    2. Has anyone converted a petrol A8 to LPG ?? There are kits (prinz do one) for installing direct injection LPG, but I have no experience of them, only "normal" injected LPG

    3. How much DIY servicing is it possible to do without purchasing a shed load of specialist tools? I have a fairly extensive toolkit and reasonable knowledge, the Omega only goes to a garage for its MOT .....I do all the rest, but it is an older car !!

    4. Are there any well known problems with the A8 that would make you reconsider owning or recommending one?

    5. Do you consider spares to both easily available and reasonably priced ???

Many thanks for any answers, and any further advice you may wish to offer.

    Regards ... O

The CRE? engine is not at all common, most A8’s had to conform to ReichsChancellor Browns stupid CO2 blinkered and misguided pro diesel company car taxation so you see very few of them. Circa 310 horsepower in the relatevely light weight aluminium A8 should be fine for towing but depending on mileage, it may be a good idea for a box fluid change. If the tow bar has to be retro fitted, be EXTREMELY careful who does this and using what as the digital electronics of the type 4H A8 are easily sent into panic mode! I would strongly suggest the genuine Audi retro fit kit but this is at least £830 plus installation and that alone is very important as the electrics have to be carefully integrated into the CAN BUS system and then the brakes and parking sensors recoded to suit. Please remember that the running and maintenance costs of this car are going to blow your mind when compared to the Omega, these are extremely sophisticated and complex cars that cost disproportionately more to run as they age and a major failure can easily exceed the cars value. A good example is that a new Audi engine is £15K, plus fitting....... Every single LPG conversion I have ever come across has been a price sensitive botched disaster and invariably makes the car run like a dog.

You life will be made more bareable by a VAG specific system such as VCDS, this is the adapter I recommend and it could pay for itself in one job VCDS-HEX-NET-Pro-Unlimited-VIN

VCDS isn’t perfect so there is also https://vcp-system.com but it is slow and clunky to use with little backup.

In addition to the above I also use the dealers system ODIS but that would be very tedious and expensive for you to get into and of the three I personally think VCDS is the most easy to use and well supported but there are some security based tasked that it cannot do.
