08 A6 ac not working.

Since a I bought the car about 4yrs ago the ac has never worked which never really bothered me, until this summer . I've had the ac regassed and dyed to find a leak, still not working properly just cool , the mechanic who is a mate of mine tested the pressure of the gas and the gauge was fluctuating when the engine was running but steady when switched off and no sign of a leak anywhere. He's scanned it for a fault but nothing has shown up unfortunately. Initially the ac was over gassed by the garage who regassed it, he has released the excess pressure to normal working pressure.
His theory is it could be the pressure switch, also why would the pressure be fluctuating on the gauge?
Any ideas or solutions would be very welcome.

The compressors are direct drive modulated delivery units and are very unreliable, I had a Passat 3C in yesterday with the same symptoms, adequate gas pressure at 4.6Bar (I like to see 5+) and weak delivery and the compressor was only three years old.

Thanks for your helpful reply . If it's the compressor that's at fault I think I'll leave it, as it seems to be one of those cars that needs money throwing at it on a regular basis, just had a new DMF fitted , as long as it drives that'll do me 😁😁. You have to realise when enough is enough 🤔 cost wise.

I know how you feel, we were touring round Wales during the hottest part ������. It was that what spurred me into getting it sorted, from the performance of trying to find the problem it'll soon be winter and it won't be needed �� . Can't see next summer being like this one lol ��. Soon be time for a change anyway in the next year or so .
