I think my cats may be on their way out, question is I know diesels have a smoke test rather than an emissions test (least I guess that is still the case) so if I have the cat removed entirely will my car fail the MOT.
Not looking for any performance stuff, just wondering if I dont need them then Ill get rid of them rather than replace them with new ones

Yes I think they only came with a DPF and the cat further back. We send loads to be cleaned, they are easier to remove than the 4 cylinder.

If a dpf needs cleaning something went wrong as they're self cleaning , all too often the shorter journeys are blaimed but there's so many other reasons .

Not necessarily as - they get clogged with ash over time which limits their soot capacity and unlike soot cannot be self cleaned. This can be caused simply by age and/or the use of the wrong oil. There are a number of commercial processes that can clean the ash out with chemical dips and back flushing and even some DIY methods with a jetwash and caustic soda!
If it was originaly fitted with a DPF (even this early model) then AFAIK with the current MOT rules it will fail as it has to meet the emissions standards of the car in it's original state and not the emissions standard of that year of manufacture - I could be wrong though and 06 does seem early for a DPF to be fitted.

Now I am at work I can use proper ETKA and it shows heading "exhaust pipe with catalyst Diesel Particulate Filter" but lower down clarifies it as a retro fit DPF kit with line fit DPF coming along for my2009.

I bought a 2008 A6 2L slime TDI with a broken CVT a few years ago and that was EU4+DPF which at the time was the first one of those I had seen.
