2001 allroad 2.5tdi. When decelerating above 50mph a noticeable pulsing / jerking is felt through the vehicle simultaneously with a 'clicking relay' sound from below the steering wheel area. I have suffered and lived with this issue for a few years now but really want to get to the bottom of it. The 'pulsing' is much more noticeable when decelerating above 80mph, feeling almost like the brake is being touched slightly. Any opinions, questions, suggestions greatly accepted.

    Hi how’s form in Skye?

the only thing I can think of that happened on mine that threw up some weird symptoms was a wheel bearing. Could be ok when the load is on but when you decelerate and the drive is relaxed it shows the wear in the bearing. Mine showed no signs of wear at all and I changed the carrier bearing and both half shafts before suspecting the wheel bearing.

    cheers

    vin

Hi Vin, all good here thanks! This problem still needs some thought though. It's very strange as the pulsing sensation only happens when decelarating in gear (car is a 6 speed manual) but when in neutral it is smotth and regular. The thing that is most irritating is the clicking relay from below the steering wheel area - when the pulsing happens it is simultaneous with the click, so I am almost 100% sure they are related. When I get some free time I will try to research what relays live in that area and find out what they do. I would presume it might be something to do with fuel pump or similar, but as yet have no idea.

OK, thanks, I'll give that a check over too. What would I expect to find if it were damaged, just a feeling of looseness?

I've been looking at the diff bearings and the OEM prices are high! But looking at pictures, is possible to source them cheaper:

    01L 409 144 A - TIMKEN LM806649
    01V 409 144 - SKF 6007 C3

I still have to confirm that

Hi. I didn't find the time to investigate this until now, but to be clear, does the driveshaft need to be removed to check for the 'looseness / play' in the bearing. I did note some oil leakage in that exact area, so think you are likely to be correct.
