Also, what is involved in replacing the bearing and seal that is shown above?

    JHM Audi B5-B6-C5 01E 6-Speed Manual Transmission Rebuild DIY/Tutorial/Instructions - FREE - YouTube

Looking at this video on youtube the mechanic here says he has never seen a diff bearing fail on an 01E! He does explain how to gain access to inspect it though. Look from 1h24m30s. Is this the location for the bearing you mentioned above?

Very easy to replace. Just remove the axis and the Output flange

OK, so is the job as follows? Remove drive shaft, unbolt and remove flange, remove seal with prybar or similar, remove diff cover then slide hammer to pull out the bearing, then press the new one in? What are the 'appropriate tools'? I have a slide hammer but no attachment for it like in your picture, also I do not have a press tool like the pictured one. What does the text say in your picture? Do you have VAG tool numbers for the necessary puller / press items?

Thanks, looks like I am all set to do the job,I just need to get a bearing puller attachment for my slidehammer first. As an update, without removing the driveshafts I note that on my car there is a fair amount of play on the drivers (right) side flange bearing, but also some (not as much) on the passenger (left) side. Looking at your video above, it appears the left side is much more complicated. Did you change the bearing on that side too?
