I have a 2004 Golf V 1.9 TDi with approx 190k on the clock. Foe some time the EML light has been on and reading the code it gives me a 16785 - EGR valve insufficient flow. I had one attempt at cleaning it in situ, but didn't really have much effect. So I ordered a new replacement off EBAY. At the weekend I set about changing it. Would have been relatively easy apart from the two bolts holding the pipe underneath which took me nearly an hour to remove. Anyway all done, but sadly it seems to have made matters worse. On the plus side there is now no EML light on, but the car runs very rough, lacks any ooomph and belches out lots of smoke.

When I put it back on I correctly connected it using the three bolts, added the pipe underneath with new gasket, fixed the throttle body with its three bolts and reconnected the vacuum hose to the EGR and the electrical connector to the throttle body.

Have I missed something? Is the new throttle body likely to be duff??

Any thoughts? My only alternative is to properly clean the old one and swap it back in.

    Gary

The quality of parts from ebay might be suspect.
Personally I would clean the OE part and re-install, hopefully it will sort the issue.
FYI, generic OBD code readers aren't the best for fault diagnosis, VCDS (or equivalent) is highly recommended.

Thanks - that's all I can think of as well. Will have a go this weekend. Maybe I'll put a VCDS reader on my birthday list
