    Hi everybody,
After a few months of ownership, I thought I'd jump on this forum and ask a few questions, seems like there's plenty of helpful and like minded enthusiasts here, thanks in advance and apologies for my lengthy post!!

I bought a 57 plate A5 3.0 TDI Quattro a few months ago - my first diesel and first quattro ever - with leather heated seats, sat-nav and manual transmission. 130k miles on the clock, car looked, sounded and drove well. Other than DPF light coming on every now and again (I don't do that many miles), so far so good.

The car's got plenty of service stamps (not main dealer in the last few years, no issues), MOT history looks good too, but I like to start fresh with whatever car I buy new (to me) from a service perspective.

    My questions are:
    1. What preventative maintaince is essential and recommended by peeps here? she's a keeper, and I've always taken good care of my cars. For e.g. I do coolant and brake fluid flush every year - it might be too often in some peoples' opinion, it's cheap enough for my peace of mind.
    2. Gear box and diff (and Haldex???) oil change: I've never owned a 4 wheel drive car, so assuming it's never been done, is this a DIY job or proffesional one? my last car was an E46 BMW, did both on my drive in under 2 hours. What oil(s) recommended?
    3. Any recommendations for an Indy near Croydon? Jobs that maybe too big or if / when I don't have the time.
    4. There don't seem to be as many guides / tutorials for A5 as was available for my E46, TBH I'm not very good at searching . Where can I find technical diagrams and service manuals for the old girl?

    Many thanks again,
    Rai

    Hi,

The 3.0tdi A5 is quite a solid car!
    Common issues;
Door handle mechanism inside the door can 'stick' and not connect with the handle resulting in a handle that does nothing. Open door from inside and whcl with the palm of your hand on the end of the door around the catch. Also spray lubricant into door handle, catch and remove the rubber grommet on the end of the door. Tends to do this more in the winter and when you try pulling the handle whilst still locked. If really stuck, remove door card and lubricate the mechanism.

Intake flaps 3 on each bank but 1 motor/linkage per bank - Engine light comes on. New linkages available for around £20.

Pre late 2008 - fuel pump issues - non starting, replace

Change oil and all filters - air filters seems to get very dirty in these cars, mine looked like a garden had used it to clear garden rubbish! Fuel filter - on pre late 2008, VCDS not needed to prime pump before starting like later models

Gearbox service - Audi say sealed for life, but box manufacturer says otherwise!
As it's a manual, it's much easier and less expensive than tip-tronic, drain and refil gearbox with GL4 or GL5 75W90, then you have transfer case (Haldex is the diff found on VWs and transverse mounted engines like the TT adn A3) Then you have a front diff and rear diff - so 4 oils to drain and refill.
Transfer case has a special friction modifier called Sturaco FM 1992, although you can buy the expensive oil from VAG with the Sturaco already added, but I have 'one-shot' bottles for sale
    Sturaco FM 1992 Transmission Friction Modifier ZF V671 600 020 A0009898203 | eBay

If you plan on keeping the car or even buying another VAG car, then the VCDS Ross-Tech diagnostic software is a good investment

Also these cars are quite tunable! with 505bhp being a good example, I myself have a stage 1 remap at 310bhp and 480lb/ft
A4 Avant 1.9 TDi160 for when the weather is on the damp side - Sold after 9yrs. Now A5 3.0TDI Q Sport Coupe (310bhp/480ft/lbs - Yamaha R6 for when its dry and want some 'High octane Petrol' fun.
