Well the clunk has returned with a vengeance
i took the car to my regular MOT centre
placed car on the ramp positioned on the circular pads for checking the steering joints etc
rocked steering wheel from side to side with no noise heard
road tested the car and CLICK

my theory was , while on the ramp using the circular pads under the wheels any strain on the steering gear is minimal compared to turning under normal use

as I have changed all suspension arms , I decided to change the complete strut assembly if only to eliminate any of the component parts.

as suspected no change, so now I'm edging towards the steering rack.

does anyone know of any issues with the rack that shows up as a clunk click issue?

also are all the racks in the B6 variation models of A4 the same? If not what part number should I search for?
will a rack from a B7 be a direct swap
my car is 1.9 tdi Avant 130 bhp 2003 plate

    thanks

Did you check the subframe I’ve read on a few forums about the subframe coming apart because it was not welded at factory just folded/crimped have a look at that first try some clamps on it and take it for a drive see if any noise still there

    Hi
    thanks for the reply
must admit I wouldn’t have thought of a subframe issue
but now I will look in that area before I tackle the rack

a few years ago I had a perished gearbox mount at the rear of the automatic box

pig to change but cured a different noise

ill take it to amates place and get it over a pit

    cheers

Ok Fitted the new kitchen so back to a proper problem.

    Checked subframe nothing obvious.

    So to recap.

I started by changing a wheel bearing (noisy and cured that issue)

Gradually i started to hear a clonk/click from drivers side wheel area.

Since then ive changed top arms (one of them twice as the bush slipped out)

Both bottom arms have been changed within last 2 months.

I have changed the strut complete with another from a breaker with same colour code on spring.

    IT IS STILL CLUNKING!

Noise can only be heard when moving, no noise if twitching the steering wheel while stationary

Car drives well other than this.

I did consider changing the rack, but i cant convince myself.

i have considered getting a complete strut, hub and arms assembly from a breaker. I am at my wits end as to what to try.

Can anyone suggest something else PLEASE?

    cheers

    Hi
If anyone is interested, or having similar issues, i have sorted my problem

I had to get a new tyre fitted and while i was there i asked for an opinion on the clonk.
The bloke was huge and when he pulled the wheel, he managed to get the car to make a clunk noise.

i was under the car listening and the noise appeared to be coming from within the hub assembly

I obtained a knuckle joint with a hub complete with a driveshaft from a breaker in Cardiff

Fitted it to the car without separating the drive shaft. Used all my suspension arms , strut ,disc and caliper etc.

    NOISES ALL GONE

its like having a different car.
