    I have a 2004 Audi A8 D3 4.0 TDI

As soon as I turn on the ignition the high speed engine cooling fan switches on and stay on.

Running the VCDS I get the following error:

    18080 - Coolant Fan Control 1
    P1672 - 000 - Open or Short to Ground
    Freeze Frame:
    RPM: 651 /min
    Torque: 105.3 Nm
    Speed: 0.0 km/h
    Duty Cycle: 9.9 %
    Voltage: 13.45 V
    Duty Cycle: 9.9 %
    Duty Cycle: 9.9 %
    Temperature: 54.9°C

Anyone else had this problem and found a cure?
Any tips for hunting down the cause?

    Many thanks

Possible fan control module at fault . You will need to swap it , quite common issue in vw /audi group

    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

Is this easily accessible or is it a radiator out and coolant drain situation?

    Many thanks

Not sure how it is in D3 , but usually module is located near fans , or sometimes is included in fans electronics. Best fallow harness from fan. If it is going straight to ecu then u need to swap fans , if you will find small box then this your module.

If you need to swap fans then you need dismantle front

There's not alot I can see with the bonnet up. Does this mean remove the front bumper?

I've seen some pics with the module attached to the fan so may mean I have to replace the lot, or try to swap it out if theres a way to remove the module on its own.

The fan controller is inside the fan motor or with that fault code you could have a broken data wire. Replacing a fan on these is a full front end strip down with radiator carrier drawn forward into the so called “service position”. There is a bewildering array of fan types so if you private message me your reg number I can try and pin point which one you need BUT they are all around £570.
