Fitting second hand dampers is daft, it should be illegal! There are at least eight different rear dampers for your car and three different types of bump stop and it is virtually guaranteed that these will be falling to bits. Private message me your REG number and I can give you the OE part numbers or check your data sticker to see if you have the PR codes for 1JA, B or C suspension and whether it is 0YA, B or C rating.

I am having a few days off so what I can look up at home is limited.

Yes it is 1JC sports suspension in weight range 2, pr code 0YB. This means the springs are 1K0 511 115 FT should you ever need some as there are at least 30 different rear springs (even more at the front) and these are marked with 1 blue and 3 brown paint marks. The only non genuine springs I will fit are Suplex.

The rear dampers are 1K0 513 029 FG which are £75.15 + VAT genuine from VW but they are also available in their “ECO” range under their part number JZW 513 025 B for £52.82 + VAT. The all important matching bump stops are 1K0 513 353 N and it is VITAL that the lower bolt WHT 003 467 and the top bolts N 906 484 02 are replaced as they are one time only stretch bolts.

You have lots of dampers to chose from but aftermarket wise the only makes I would fit are Sachs, Boge or Monroe. The problem is that Sachs from Euro Car parts are £79 and that is more than the VW ECO parts! The bump stop I would buy from Febi and the bolts have to be genuine.

The bottom damper bolts on this platform (PQ35) are a pain to get out as the spring gets in the way and you can only use a 21mm spanner as a socket and ratchet can’t get in there plus they are a difficult to get back in as the location is not square to the damper when the suspension is unloaded and it is easy to damage the M14x 1.5 thread in the hub which is a bit of a disaster. When tightening these bolts you can’t get access with a conventional torque wrench (I can’t remember the torque figure off the top of my head) so we bought some reasonable price 21mm spanner’s (I was not cutting up Snap Off stuff!) and I welded an old 1/2” drive socket to the cut down length of spanner and made a couple of torque adapters for the workshops. When doing this you have to reduce the set torque figure and there are plenty of online calculators to help you work out the correction factor.

It’s only getting worse, you should see how complex the listings for Golf 7 are, the aftermarket has little chance of getting it right.
