I think the difference is that there are so many variants of the dsg box. 6 speed, 7 speed, dry clutch, wet clutch, transverse, longitudinal then over the years all those have been updated with letter/numbers after the model.
I would take a stab that your should be the dl501 like mine.
Does the sump not need to come out so you can clean the magnets that pick up metal particles? Just a guess.

My box is a 0B5, code PXD MNB.

In Elsawin's 'Strict Maintenance Operations' list, only 2 items are mentioned for the 7 speed box, and that is ATF and filter change. In the 'Workshop Repair Guide' section, the instructions don't say anything about dropping the pan and cleaning the internal strainer or magnets. On my car, this is a very involved process as the is a major crossmember in the way, and I think also the steering rack has to move. I can't believe they designed a gearbox that needs this level of dismantling at only 40K, and every 40K? I thought the idea of the external easy to change filter was to make the oil change nice and quick and easy?

Also the instructions for dropping the pan are mainly aimed for a gearbox on the bench, as they do say it 'can' also be removed when in the car. That implies, under normal circumstances it isn't removed when in the car.

I feel like I should have booked it into Audi to have this done, but with this extreme level of confusion, no information, and mis information, How can I trust Audi would do this correctly?

Dealership will have a proper guide and step by step instructions for the newbies to follow.
Think it’s around £2-300 for the service.

And if the dealer gets it wrong it is their cost to put it right. For cars over 3 years old Audi charge £225 for an S-Tronic oil and filter change. Given the commnets in this post seems it would be £225 well spent for the piece of mond that it has been done properly

Mate if I was you I'd find a local gearbox specialist and go to see them, offer £20 £30 to talk me through what is needed, you've done half the job bought the oil if it's a nightmare then give in, but go down fighting.

I'm not giving up without a fight! I've been servicing and repairing my Audis for over 30 years including converting an auto to a manual, engine rebuilds, VCDS diagnostics, key matching and programming, Diesel pump immobiliser matching etc etc etc - So far nothing has stopped successful work on my cars. The only time they have needed outside assistance, is for things like wheel bearing pressing, and diagnosis of an alarm fault on my C6 A6 before buying VCDS. I can't believe a routine gearbox oil change has caused so much trouble and confusion!
I have the ability and tools to do the job, It's I just don't know exactly what the job is, or what quantity of oil I should be draining out and replacing, and has something gone badly wrong as I seem to be 'missing' 2.5 Litres of oil hiding somewhere in the gearbox. During my research, my gearbox could contain 4L, 4.5L 5L, 6L or 7 Litres of oil. Most sites and TPS say 7Litres. if it turns out to be 4.5, or 5L, then job done, sign the book, and see you in another 40K

could it be stuck in some oil cooler?
Was the box up to temp when you drained?
A few references to the dl501/ob5 says it’s 7 litres.
Only other thing is there a tube inside the drain hole? Some of them have it to help filling as you fill till it runs out but when draining you need to remove.

    1. If anything was stuck inside, it may be because I had to jack the car slightly to get the drain bowl to sit on a plank across the pit. But 2.5 litres??? I assumed absolute level and oil temperature was for filling.
    2. The oil was hot when drained, (but it's like water when cold too).
    3. 7 Litres is the most common capacity I have come across.
    4. This box has no tube in the drain plug, they are for the transverse DSG's where you fill from the top until the oil pours out of the drain plug. If the tube is left in, you get hardly any or no oil out.

The way it’s filled you can’t really over fill it so if it was me(I’m lazy) I will just follow the fill process and be done. Worse case scenario you have at least changed 65% of the oil so next time do it around 30k ish instead of 40.
    Just a thought.

Already had that thought! This is what I will probably end up doing anyway, but do another change at 20k. This will give me nearly 2 years to find out what's happening with this, and as the next brake fluid change is next year and in 3 years, it will split up the servicing work load.
