My Polo has a noisy gearbox. If you press the clutch the noise goes away and sometimes stays away for a while and then comes back.
I have changed the release bearing and also tried another gearbox but it is still exactly the same.
I stripped the original gearbox and can find no worn bearings or swarf stuck to the magnet in the gearbox.
Anybody got any ideas or is this a common problem?
My next step is to get a bearing set for the gearbox and replace them, even though they all look good.
    Thanks for any help.

The 02R (a development of the 02J which itself came from the 1987 02A) can be a bit of a rattler if used without a DMF and the AMF was never fitted with one. If you were to measure the input shaft end float you would probably find it has little or no pre load and so replacing the input and output shaft roller bearings, ensuring they have the correct pre load, would make it quieter.

Thanks Crasher, I was hoping you would show up as I knew you would have the answer. I am just trying to order a set of bearings for it. Any idea what the preload is on the input shaft?
    Thanks for any help.
Sorry this is such a late reply. Getting round to doing those jobs I should have done years ago!

The preload is calculated by setting a gap using a control shim then measuring the deflection and calculating the shim thickness using a preload specification... not a moment’s work.

The control shim is 0.65mm, then you use a dial gauge to measure the amount of deflection in the input shaft and use this to calculate the thickness of the shim you need to instal, if the thickest shim available to not enough, you can use two but I have never seen that.

This is the table off elsa
