Fault codes can be more trouble than they are worth, today we had a nice chap call and say his 1.4 16v Fabia had a problem and would not start, the mechanic that looked at it said it was the lambda sensor as that was the code stored and everything else seemed OK and you could move the engine by hand but it would not turn over on the starter. When it was dropped off in my car park later, my business partner asked if I could take a break from the 88 Audi Coupe I was working on to see if I could get it running so having to avoid pushing it around. I tried turning it over and it was all clumpy and spluttered and my mind said cam belt BUT this had been checked. I popped off the air filter and cam belt upper cover and all looked OK but turning it over showed the exhaust cam did not want to join in, £2k of damage on a car worth £800 tops, do not pass go and do not collect £200 at the scrappy as you won’t get that much......

As you rightly pointed out fault codes can be very misleading, the problem is the new line of young tech generation live by there code reader and if no faults are shown it must be ok because the software says so, unfortunately they do not no how to fix problems because they are not taught they only know how to change parts out.
As for the car I feel for the customer, its down to the
    scrappy
as you said and I bet its not a bad car and would be a good run-around if it was working. what ever happened to the good old breakers yard where you could pick up a good second-hand engine for a few quid, gone are the good old days.
