Shat thermostatic valve? Do you mean the fuel temperature sensor? This is in a small plastic adapter housing in the return fuel line from the tandem pump, these fail and also the wires snap as the sensor flaps around so much.

    Crasher many thanks for reply.
Thanks but i know where the g81 temp sensor is.
But in the system there is a Preheat valve.
Basically fuel goes around a loop thus: Filter, High Pressure Pump, Injector rail, G81.
When fuel is used by the injectors the the filter is topped up from the tank and the engine runs just fine.
Problem is that the fuel in the loop ends up getting to hot, so the preheat valve opens to return fuel to the tank via the fuel cool under drivers seat.
This basically maintains an optimal fuel temp and prevent waxing in the filter when fuel is cold.
In the golf 4 and other VAG models of that time the PHV was a little valve on top of the fuel filter.
So my question is where is it in the golf mk5?
I think it is now inside the the top of the filter case.

See diagram in this thread http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=349183

    Any ideas please?
