Hello, so I recently serviced my Passat SE (AWX 130pd 1.9 tdi 176k) as I do when it tells me too, however when I got oil from TPS as I always do, they gave me 5w30 where usually I get 5w40.

All of a sudden, it's a bit down on power, but not massively, it is overboosting and going into limp mode less than it had, idle is fine sounds sweet as for the mileage, but there is this thudding coming from the air box, which gets quicker if I rev, it's louder if I take the air filter out, I noticed a hole had been worn through the air box conduit going into the air box which I have resealed.

There are no new fault codes on VCDS.

I first suspected cam shaft worn, my neighbour who has just rebuilt his diesel engine, suggested it wouldn't be idling as well if it was the camshaft - and it isn't any more rattly than normal
I guess injector loom could be at fault? - it's never been replaced
Could it be it really doesn't like thinner oil?!

I have VCDS lite - registered, is there anything I can check cylinder/injectors wise or anything else? Any clues as to what to look for would be really appreciated!

Thumping through the air box will most likely be camshaft I’m afraid. I’ve been there. It takes ten minutes to pull the rocker cover off so worth a check. Check lobes for sharp edges and try see if you can see the rappers for any dishing.

    Thanks fella,

I’ve pretty much decided to get rid, gutted as I am, but now I don’t do big miles, it’s not what the car would enjoy doing anyway. So the choice is do the work myself (learning as I go - with help from a mate) definitely not worth getting a garage to do the work, or sell as is for £250! Had a few people contact me potentially interested but if it doesn’t sell as is, I may as well do what I can to fix it, then sell it for a bit more, sadly not worth much financially, and as I have a T4 I can’t justify having both - even if it is the best combination to have!

Since I have owned it, it has been serviced with 5w40 and filter changes whenever it beeped at me and told me to, except this time they (Tps) gave me 5w30. It was garage serviced before I had it, they hadn’t changed the timing belt when I bought it at 84k though, but there’s a fair history of stuff done before I had it

When someone experiences camshaft wear it's been with the 5W40 / incorrect oil ( non PD ) or even a dealer parts incorrectly supplied non PD 10W40 semi synthetic .

One would assume many camshaft deaths from the stupid LongLife interval but I doubt out of sense many are subjected to it hense .

It’s strange I have always been careful to get pd specific 5w40, as yup guys at TPS can get things wrong, I triple checked that the 5w30 was correct. But it was only after that and immediately after that, that the symptoms started, I guess you would expect that camshaft wear would not be immediate but gradual? I haven’t had chance to inspect but I will soon, I think I’ll get a new rocker cover gasket first though, as it is blatantly leaking oil from there

I have seen them cheap on the fleabay, and £25 from dark side, I guess the rumours of complete new rocker cover from Vw are true?

Definitely gradual , it's coincidental with the oil change .

The 5W30 507.00 actually is higher anti wear too .
