54 reg Touran 1.9pd, 130.000 miles, starter motor is lazy, clutch rattly, both about to be changed.
I went out yesterday, started and stopped a few times over several miles, all quite normal. came back to it and it turned over very slowly like a flat battery, wouldn't start. So we put jump leads on it but it just wouldn't turn over. Any way, got it towed home and had a look at it today and it seems like the engine has seized?? I've got it in gear and rocking it back and forth won't budge the crank at all in any gear.
Fluid levels all appear normal, no sign of metal in the sump or rocker cover.
    Any ideas?

Totally failed DMF, it is what happens when you push the rattling too far, we did one the other day (same set up in a Passat 3C) and it was so bad the crank bolts were covered by the plate, sometimes they are locked solid and you have to use a cut off wheel to remove the centre of the flywheel plate just to get at the bolts.

Thank you. Sorry about the late reply. Gives me a little ray of hope!
I know nothing about this type of clutch, so how does this cause the crank to lock up?

Made a start on it, the gearbox is off and the engine turns, clutch plate is just down to the rivets. It would appear that the starter motor is jammed solid.
    Onward...

It locks up because the outer ring becomes uncentralised and hits things.

Thanks Crasher, haven't done much today. The starter is completely solid, tempting to take grinder to it find out what happened inside.

I have given up asking why and now just fix things, trying to work out “why” over everything has made me older than I am....

Ok, we're back up and running!
It's had a new clutch/flywheel, slave cylinder, starter, and a couple of wishbone bushes. It's made an amazing difference, I'd no idea of how bad it was getting but all good now.
    Thanks for the replies.

Mrs Crasher (a programer) says she does not need to understand binary, she types virtual English into the I series and it does all the work to hex and binary for her...

We had a T5 5 cylinder in the other day with the usual alternator rubber coupling failure, or so we thought. On inspection we could see the drive coupling had not failed as is usual but it was not being driven and was just jerking around when touched (NOT recommended!!!!!) and the DMF was banging away like a forge hammer. We have not pulled the box off yet but I think the failing DMF has damaged the in bell housing spur gear assembly and that means a new engine as NONE of the parts for the block spur gear assembly are available as a spare part! I find that situation unforgivable and another example of German engineering arrogance.

Hi, dredging up an old thread...
Did they ever make a single mass assembly for the 1.9pd engine?
