    Hi There,

Completely ignorant question, but I want to check that I'm not being taken for a ride.

Just taken my car in for a service and new timing belt and they also replaced front gator, two tyres, rear pads and rear springs.

They took it out for a road test and brought it back on the ramp to check and the power steering light came on with fault code 00573 - 'steering angle sensor implausible signal' - each time they clear it, it trips again.

They are insisting that this is in no way related to the work they have done, it's just bad timing and that the steering rack now needs to be replaced.

Does that sound correct and reasonable?

    Thanks for your help!

I had a steering angle sensor fault (can't remember the exact code) after doing the timing belt on an A3 (2.0 Tdi BKD). It was a red steering wheel picture on the dash. Did some searching and found that it can quite commonly occur after having the battery disconnected for a while. I followed the procedure below. It took a few goes to work but did get rid of the light. Been fine since.

    Ignition on start engine.
Centre steering wheel hold ~5 secs
Full left lock, hold 10 secs
Full right lock hold 10 secs
    Centre wheel
    Engine off, ignition off
    Ignition on
Wait around 5 secs should go off (mine didn't)
Short drive should go off (mine did - about 100 metres straight drive)

Hope that works and you don't need a new steering rack!

Which year is the car? The electric power steering on a Golf 5 will often throw this and similar codes when the battery has been off or work has been performed in the air with the engine running which is often nessesary. Usually this code can be cleared just by slowly driving the car along and winding the steering from lock to lock and possibly winding from lock to lock whilst standing still. Often specific techniques need to be applied using suitable VAG tailored diagnostic equipment, namely VCDS and they have some good information on their web site about this very common issue VW Golf (1K) Steering Assist - Ross-Tech Wiki

Of course there is the possibility that the rack has just failed due to bad luck and failure is a common issue with the very early 2004 cars with the first generation system and the correct method of repair means upgrading to the third generation system which is complex and expensive. It is embarrassing and stressful for a garage when a random and non consequential fault occurrs on a car during work but a garage cannot be held responsible for faults like this just because they have the car.
